What are guide tones?
Guide tones are the third and the seventh of a chord — the two notes that decide its quality. They are the skeleton of jazz comping and the safest targets in any solo, and on guitar the whole idea sits under two fingers.
Two notes tell you the quality
Take Cmaj7 apart. The root, C, names the chord — and in a band the bass player has it covered before you touch a string. The fifth, G, is structural filler: it thickens the sound and tells you almost nothing about what kind of chord you are in. The information lives in the other two notes. Lower the seventh a half step, B to B♭, and the settled Cmaj7 becomes C7, a dominant chord leaning forward into the next bar. Lower the third as well, E to E♭, and it darkens into Cm7. Three different chords, three different jobs — and the root and fifth never moved.
That is the whole idea. The third says major or minor; the seventh says settled or restless. Together they are called guide tones, because they are the notes that guide the ear through a progression — everything else is decoration by comparison.
Guide tones under your fingers
Because two notes carry the quality, two notes are enough to comp with. Big-band rhythm guitarists built careers on little more — Freddie Green steered the Basie band for fifty years with chords this size. On the D and G strings, the guide tones of a ii–V–I in C sit inside four frets:
Notice what these grips are not: none of them contains its chord's root. A guide-tone pair never does — the two most informative notes of a seventh chord are also the two a bass player will never fight you over. And they are not new material either. Look inside any drop-2 voicing or drop-3 voicing you already play and this pair is sitting in the middle of it; a shell voicing is the same pair with a root added below. The four-note shapes are guide tones wearing a coat — and so are extended voicings, where this pair stays put while a ninth or thirteenth colors the strings around it.

A guide-tone line through the ii–V–I
Now play the three grips in order and listen to the two lines they trace. The top voice falls from C to B and stays there. The bottom voice holds its F through two chords, then falls to E. Each move is a half step or nothing — and each note is trading jobs as it goes. C, the seventh of Dm7, falls to B, the third of G7. F, the third of Dm7, waits and becomes the seventh of G7, queued up to fall in its turn. Sevenths fall to thirds; thirds wait to become sevenths. This seesaw is the engine of voice leading — there it is drawn inside full four-note voicings, but it belongs to the guide tones alone:

Tap the two speakers in turn. Everything the four-note version knows about where the harmony is going was already present in two notes; the full voicings add register and warmth, but the guide tones supply the logic. That is worth hearing once and remembering always — when a chart goes by too fast for the whole grip, the two-note version is not a compromise. It is the part that mattered.
Soloing: land on the guide tone
The same seesaw is the oldest soloing device in jazz. Play the line by itself — F, F, E in whole notes over the changes, or C, B, B — and you are already outlining the harmony with a melody one note wide. A solo built on guide tones aims one at each chord change and treats the space between as connective tissue: approach the target from a half step above, walk to it through a scale fragment, or rest until it arrives. The listener hears the harmony turn inside your line, without a chord instrument playing a single voicing behind you.
It also explains a familiar frustration in reverse. When a solo runs a scale up and down and still sounds like a scale, it is usually because the notes that land on the chord changes are accidental — nothing marks the moment where Dm7 becomes G7. Transcribe a chorus of any player you love and circle what falls on each change: thirds and sevenths, far more often than chance. The scale supplies the syllables; the guide tones supply the sentence.
